Chapter Eight

TALIA

Searching for an ancient obsidian arrowhead in a dense forest of old oaks was no easy feat. Adding the centaurs and dryads that called the woodland home made it all but impossible. They hated wolves. All wolves, even half breeds like shifters.

I would have pointed out the irony in that given their own dual natures if I thought they would have stopped to listen before trying to rid their forest of me.

Avoiding the woodland creatures had slowed me down. I spent more time hiding from them than I did looking for the damned arrowhead. At the rate I’d been going, I would be forced to forfeit the challenge.

Leto hadn’t set a time limit on the second trial, but I seriously doubted it was infinite. She would put an end to my search and make a declaration that I had lost the challenge.

And my life.

It didn’t make sense that the demon wolf goddess blamed me for her husband’s misdeeds. But nothing about our situation made sense, especially not the demon wolf god’s infatuation with me or the pact between him and his devotees—the Deofol pack.

Their relationship seemed awfully one-sided to me. He got the pick of their women, and they got what in return? Territory in Alaska? I assumed it was for the oil rights and the money and power that went along with it.

Because it sure as hell couldn’t have been for the weather.

If my calculations were correct, I’d spent the better part of half an hour crouched behind a pile of decomposing moss and mushroom-covered wood. My hamstrings and calves were cramped. If my hiding spot were discovered by a centaur or a dryad, the knots in my legs would stop me before either of them could.

Another herd of centaurs galloped past. Once the last of them cleared my line of sight, I made the decision to break from my hiding spot and continue my search for the lost arrowhead. I pressed my hand to the ground, checking for any vibrations from thundering hooves in the distance, and dashed out from behind the pile of rotted tree limbs.

I made it across a clearing in the forest to another cluster of trees and scurried around to hide myself behind the thick trunk. So far, so good. I’d been lucky enough to avoid capture. There was a first time for everything.

If only that luck continued.

A dryad dropped down from her perch in a fork in the branches above me. She’d been so quiet and still, her natural coloring the perfect camouflage to disappear in the leafy canopy. She even smelled like the forest, making her undetectable to my heightened senses. The dryad caught me off guard and had me at a disadvantage.

“What business does a wolf have in Foloi?” She palmed a small blade, aimed for my face and prepared to throw the knife. “Wolves are forbidden in this forest.”

“Leto sent me to—”

“The demon wolf goddess?” The dryad scoffed, bitter laughter bubbling up from a place of darkness within her. “Carrying Leto’s banner won’t win you any favors here, wolf.
